CFCC Wooden Boat Building Program

Saturday All Day
The Wooden Boat Building program is a legacy vocational program that was started in the late 1970’s and is currently led by Walter Atkins. This one year program takes students from the process of lofting to the launching of several purpose built small boats. Students are taught the proper use of hand and power tools in addition to planking and joinery work. Several student built boats will be on display (these boats will be for sale) with information available about the program.

CFCC Steam Bending Demonstrations
What is steam bending?
Saturday 11:00AM, 1:00PM and 3:00PM

Steam bending is a centuries-old process by which steam is used to soften wooden planks so they can then be bent and shaped into the many various parts of a wooden boat. We will employ a traditional wooden steam box to deliver the heat  and moisture needed to shape the white oak wooden frames. After being on the steam for an hour the planks are pliable and ready to be set into place. The planks cool down quickly so it’s all hands-on deck to get them fitted into the boat. We are committed to keeping this tradition alive, while also carefully striking a balance between the romance of wooden boatbuilding and the skills needed to work in today’s modern boat building industry.

CFCC Boat Manufacture and Service program
Sunday, All Day

The Boat Manufacture and Service program trains students to work in production style fiberglass boat construction in addition to service shops and boat yards. This one year program teaches students the many intricacies of fiberglass boat construction and repair, in addition to boat electrical systems, plumbing and engine installation. The Boat Manufacture and service program is in the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) League of Schools.

CFCC Electrical Wiring Demonstration
